Barbering Lecturer – Prison Education

Location: HMP Isle of Wight
Salary: Up to £38,144 per annum (depending on skills and experience)
Hours: 20 – 37.5 hours per week

Part-Time Option: Monday to Friday mornings delivering Barbering
Full-Time Option: Barbering delivery during mornings, plus Outreach work Monday–Thursday afternoons

The Role

As a Barbering Lecturer, you will deliver engaging and practical Barbering sessions to small groups of learners within a prison environment.

You'll support learners throughout their educational journey, helping them develop both technical barbering skills and the confidence needed to progress into employment, training, or further education.

For candidates seeking a full-time role, additional Outreach responsibilities are available. This involves working with learners across the prison, encouraging participation in education and supporting engagement with learning opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Barbering courses and practical workshops to learners.
  • Create engaging lesson plans and learning resources.
  • Assess learner work and provide constructive feedback.
  • Monitor progress and support learners in achieving their goals.
  • Maintain accurate learner records and documentation.
  • Set and review SMART learner targets.
  • Create a positive, inclusive and motivating learning environment.
  • Support learners with varying abilities and educational backgrounds.
  • Work collaboratively with prison and education staff to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Encourage learners to build employability skills, confidence and resilience.

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Professional Barbering qualification or substantial industry experience.
  • Strong practical barbering skills and current industry knowledge.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to motivate, inspire and engage learners.
  • Commitment to helping others achieve their potential.

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification such as PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent.
  • Assessing or Internal Quality Assurance qualifications.
  • Experience delivering accredited training programmes.
  • Previous teaching, mentoring, coaching or training experience.
  • Experience working with learners from diverse backgrounds.
